Choosing the right car seat can feel overwhelming with all the different safety standards, regulations, and installation methods. Confusing terminology shouldn’t make an already important decision harder.
Car seat safety regulations are updated over time as research, technology, and crash-testing methods develop. Newer regulations aim to provide clearer guidance on choosing the correct seat for a child’s size and to reflect how vehicles and installation systems have evolved.
Keeping your child safe is the top priority for parents. In this guide, we explain the key safety standards - R44 and R129 (including i-Size) and fitting methods such as ISOFIX, so you can make an informed choice with confidence.
Safety Standards
R44 Car Seats
What is R44?
R44 is the safety regulation, classifying car seats based on the child's weight and is still valid in UK.
Key Features:
R129 Car Seats
What is R129?
R129 is the most recent European car seat safety regulation. It focuses on the child’s height rather than their weight alone.
Key Features:
What is i-Size?
i-Size is a sub-category within the R129 regulation. All i-Size car seats must comply with R129 standards, not all R129 car seats are i-Size.
i-Size seats offer additional reassurance that they will fit in all i-Size certified cars. This means that if you have an i-Size approved vehicle you can be confident an i-Size infant car seat will fit correctly. To help guarantee proper installation and compatibility, all i-Size seats are designed to be no wider than 44 cm. Most cars designed after 2013/2014 are designed to be iSize compliant, to be certain you should consult your vehicle manual.
Key Features:
Installation Methods
Installation method describes how the car seat is secured in a vehicle.
Seatbelt Fit
Overview:
This method uses the vehicle’s 3 point car seat belt to secure the infant car seat in place by feeding it through a specified path around the car seat which is clearly described by the manufacturer in the instruction manual and also indicated on the car seat labelling.
A correctly installed seatbelt fit is as secure as other installation methods.
Key Features:
* Vehicle compatibility can vary between car seat models. Always check manufacturer compatibility lists and your vehicle handbook before purchasing or installing a car seat.
ISOFIX
Overview: ISOFIX is a standardised installation method whereby ISOFIX arms in the infant car seat latch onto built-in anchor points in the car. Most cars produced after 2013 include ISOFIX connection points.
ISOFIX connection must always be used in conjunction with a secondary installation method (either vehicle seat belt, top tether or front loading leg)
Not all seats with ISOFIX arms have been tested to the R129
Key Features:
Top Tether:
Overview:
Top tethers are a secondary installation method to be used in conjunction with either a seatbelt fit or ISOFIX points to prevent rotation of the seat.
The top tether is an adjustable webbing strap attached to the top or rear of the car seat shell that clips to a designated vehicle anchor point. Anchor points are commonly found on the floor or ceiling of a vehicles’ boot or on the back of a vehicle seat. The location will be detailed in your vehicle manual.
Key Features:
Front Loading Leg:
Overview:
A car seat front loading leg is a secondary installation method to be used in conjunction with ISOFIX points to prevent rotation of the seat. The loading leg is an adjustable metal support leg that extends from the base of the car seat to the floor/footwell of the vehicle Key Features:
How to Choose a Car Seat
When selecting a car seat, it can help to consider three main factors:
• Your child’s height or weight range, depending on the safety standard
